Review: My Grandma and Me (picture book) for MCBD 2020

Hello all! Today is Multicultural Children’s Book Day and we couldn’t be more excited to participate in this event. Thank you so much to the MCBD Team for including us in this celebration!

Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2020 (1/31/20) is in its 7thyear! This non-profit children’s literacy initiative was founded by Valarie Budayr and Mia Wenjen; two diverse book-loving moms who saw a need to shine the spotlight on all of the multicultural books and authors on the market while also working to get those book into the hands of young readers and educators.

Seven years in, MCBD’s mission is to raise awareness of the ongoing need to include kids’ books that celebrate diversity in homes and school bookshelves continues.

Candlewick Press kindly gifted us a copy of My Grandma and Me by Mina Javaherbin for review as part of MCBD 2020.

What it’s about:

“In a true tale of a young girl in Iran and her grandmother, this beautiful ode to family celebrates small moments of love that become lifelong memories.”

Review:

I’m so glad I was given an opportunity to read this wonderful book about a loving relationship between a young girl, Mina, and her grandmother. I love that the characters are visibly Muslim and shown practicing their faith. Simple acts like prayer, going to the mosque, and fasting are represented beautifully in the text and illustrations. It’s incredibly heartwarming that the most meaningful memories for Mina are rooted in the Islamic faith. I really liked the inclusion of the friendships between Mina and Annette and their grandmothers. It’s sweet how the girls delight in their grandmothers’ praying for each other and quilting blankets together to donate to their respective houses of worship. This representation of community and kindness between people of different cultures/faiths is so important for children to see. Overall, this is a fantastic multicultural picture book that is sure to be enjoyed by many young (and older!) readers.
