The Lightbearers Book Tag

I am so excited to share a brand new book tag I created that is inspired by London Shah’s debut novel, THE LIGHT AT THE BOTTOM OF THE WORLD. I have been anticipating this book ever since it’s announcement and feel incredibly lucky that I was able to read an early copy of it.

THE LIGHT AT THE BOTTOM OF THE WORLD is a YA sci-fi set in the future when Earth is submerged under water. British-Muslim Leyla McQueen, a champion submersible racer, is on a dangerous quest to rescue her father from the clutches of a shadowy organization with extreme ideology and methods. With its immersive setting, high-stakes plot, and compelling characters, THE LIGHT AT THE BOTTOM OF THE WORLD needs to jump to the top of your TBR pile!

The prompts for the book tag are adapted from the different elements present in THE LIGHT AT THE BOTTOM OF THE WORLD. Hopefully, this will help motivate y’all to read it! The book tag can be completed/shared on all social media platforms. Be sure to use #TheLightbearers and tag @perusingya when you share on Twitter and Instagram, and link back to YA Book Corner when you post on your blog.

1️⃣ The LIGHT book cover features the city of London. Name a book that depicts a real or fictional city on its cover.

Before I knew anything about PASSENGER, I fell in love with the cover. 😍 I was immediately intrigued with the idea of New York City trapped inside the bottle, stuck in time if you will, being juxtaposed with the eerie reflection of the ship and ocean. Similarly, the image of an underwater London is what got me curious about LIGHT.

2️⃣ Leyla McQueen is a champion submersible racer. Name a character you would like to see race against her in the London Submersible Marathon.

Ezra Mason is a hot-shot pilot in ILLUMINAE and knows what it’s like to be in intense, life-threatening situations. I would love to see his space flying skills transfer under water. Though, I have no doubt my girl Leyla would remain champion.

3️⃣ Leyla ventures outside of London for the very first time in LIGHT. Name a book where you enjoyed exploring its world.

The world of WARCROSS was so cool to read about! It blurs the line between reality and gaming. The way society embraces technology was really fascinating to me. Exploring a world where humanity lives under water and how they psychologically effects them was my favorite part of LIGHT.

4️⃣ Leyla and Ari are reluctant companions on a long journey. Name a character you would want on an epic adventure with you.

Elias Veturius. I mean, do I really need to explain this? 🤣

5️⃣ Leyla is never far from her brolly, or umbrella in LIGHT.  Name a character accessory you wish you had.

I really had to think about this one. It wasn’t until I was admiring my copy of REBEL, I finally remembered the paper clip ring Day makes for June in PRODIGY. It’s handmade, simple jewelry, with so much meaning behind it. Just thinking about it is giving me all the FEELS! 💜

6️⃣ Books from the Old World are considered valuable in LIGHT. Name a book that you hope would survive for future generations to read.

When it comes to Muslim representation in literature, no other book has made me so emotional and happy. I would definitely want future generations of Muslim teens to have this book to feel seen, understood, and proud of who they are. Plus, it also gives hope to readers to persevere through challenges and unexpected life situations.

I hope you enjoyed my answers to the The Lightbearers Book Tag! I’m excited to read everyone’s responses. 😀
